KnitNet is an online magazine for knitters, currently published five times a year. The first edition appeared in October, 1998 and has been published continuously ever since. It appears on the World Wide Web at http://www.knitnet.com. Beginning in February, 2003, it will be published six times a year. New editions appear in February, April, June, August, October and December.
How much does it cost?
KnitNet is a subscription based magazine. The annual subscription cost is now $12 a year for online access OR $25 a year for online access PLUS a CD Rom with six editions. You can register online.
Who is KnitNet?
Sharon Airhart is the Editor. Dougal Bichan is the Publisher.
What's the best way to look at KnitNet?
You'll need a screen browser. You can use Netscape or Internet Explorer.
In Netscape, we recommend that you set your browser preferences for "colors" to use black text on white background but that you DO NOT check "always use my colours". We also recommend that you check "use document specified fonts" in the "font" preference.
Set your screen to 1024x768 pixels (preferred) OR 800x600 pixels and set your colours to "thousands". You'll find these settings under "display" on your control panel.
Click on the cover photo. You'll see our masthead and Table of Contents.
You'll also find navigation arrows. These will allow you to "page through" KnitNet from the first page to the last, moving backward and forward one page at a time.
Once you've had a look through the magazine, you can use the Table of Contents to jump to specific features. Every page includes a link back to the Table of Contents. The navigation bar also allows you to jump directly to our online store, the KnitNet LYS.
What happens to the current edition of KnitNet when the new edition is published?
Earlier editions may be archived online and available from the Table of Contents for some limited period of time.
Back editions are available on CD at the end of every publishing year.
How do I get schematics, charts and pattern instructions?
Next to each pattern, you'll find a set of icons indicating which of the following are available for each pattern.
detail photographs
a list of abbreviations used
a chart of the pattern
a schematic of the pattern
a "Printer friendly" downloadable PDF (Adobe Acrobat)
some patterns are available as kits in the KnitNet LYS
some patterns can be purchased on the KnitNet LYS
some patterns will have a drawing to help explain them
How can I save your patterns?
There are several ways to save KnitNet patterns.
First, you can use your browser to either save patterns to a file on your computer or to print the pattern on paper. Or both! We recommend that if you print the patterns on a black-only printer, you save the pictures to your computer for future reference.
Second, every KnitNet pattern is available in Portable Document Format (PDF) or as an ftp (file transfer protocol).
Next to every pattern, you'll see an arrow. If you click on the arrow, you'll see a PDF file of the pattern or an rtf version for downloading via ftp. You can save the document to your computer or print it. Be sure to set "Shrink to fit" when you print. If it is a PDF , in order to view it or view and print it, you will need to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is available free of charge from the Adobe Web site.
NOTE: Some KnitNet readers who are AOL members have been unable to download and use the PDF files or RTF files. AOL has asked that subscribers contact them directly at: webmaster@aol.com. As well, Web TV users may not be able to download or print PDF files because of the limitations of their equipment.
How can I print/save photographs from KnitNet?
You can use your browser — Netscape or Internet Explorer — to print or save the photos right from the magazine page. Click just outside the photo so you are "in" the correct frame and then select "print frame" or "save frame as" from your browser file menu (Netscape.)
If you don't have a colour printer or would simply like to save the picture, just use your right mouse button to save the picture to a file on your computer. You can then either refer to it later on screen or print it.
From the second edition, photographs of the pattern will be included in the PDF file. Please note that if you have a black-ink-only computer printer, the quality of the photograph will be poor compared to the online version.
Can I download the whole magazine?
Not at this time.
I can't easily see (fill in the blanks) on KnitNet. Can you fix it?
We've had several email messages from people who are having a hard time seeing some parts of KnitNet. For example, one reader says the "background overshadows the print".
While publishing on the World Wide Web gives us incredible flexibility in many respects, we are not in total control of what you see. We keep the magazine design very simple and we take great care to look at it ourselves on a variety of systems, with various screen and colour settings and with both major browsers. That said, your computer system and settings affect how you see and use KnitNet.
How can I see the Ask KnitNet video clips of techniques?
The "Ask KnitNet" page will include video clips illustrating answers to the questions. They are in Real Video format. In order to view them, you will need the Real Video Media Player. Instructions are on the Ask KnitNet page.
What kind of questions can I ask?
The purpose of the column is to highlight techniques. Each edition, one or two techniques will be demonstrated. For questions about supplies or patterns, write to Knitters Network.
How can I submit one of my pattern designs to KnitNet?
Pattern proposals are welcome! Check out our guidelines for designers by clicking on the words "submit designs" on the Table of Contents.
