Fiona Ellis' new colour knitting book takes a fresh look at a traditional technique, Fair Isle. Inspired Fair Isle Knits, Potter Craft, October, 2007, 144 pages, uses the elements — water, air, earth and fire — as the background theme for delicious designs that are offered along with a bit of philosophy, history and mythology. Fiona Ellis uses unique pattern placement, felting and asymmetrical patterning to update the look of Fair Isle. More, she offers imaginative uses for the technique. A Fair Isle halter top and Fair Isle patterning at the ends of a mohair stole, for example. (Read our interview with Fiona Ellis.)
Like Inspired Fair Isle Knits, Knits from a Painter's Palette (Sixth & Spring Books, May, 2007, 128 pages) is much more than a pattern book. The story of the popular Koigu Yarns and its founder Maie Landra, Knits from a Painter's Palette includes 25 patterns, most using Koigu's signature modular knitting techniques and nearly all using the handpainted variegated yarn for which Koigu is famous. It's an inspiring story about a talented artist and her family. That said, for those who want to move beyond variegated yarns, it would be a shame to forget that Koigu makes a spectacular solid coloured Premium Merino yarn, too.
For those who would like to try hand colouring yarns, The Yarn Lover's Guide to Hand Dyeing by Linda LaBelle (Potter Craft, November 2007, 160 pages) is a detailed and beautiful introduction to immersion dyeing and hand-painting as well as a technique called “cold pad” which allows you to dye already knitted pieces. The book also introduces readers to some of the most widely known purveyors of hand painted yarns like Cheryl Schaefer of Schaefer Yarn and Karen Selk of Treenway Silks. There are, as well, a number of practical and easy projects in the book, from gauntlets to leg warmers to a beautiful little beaded hat. If you're dying to dye, this is a great primer.
