METHOD
MAIN BAG
Front Cast on 40 stitches Knit in stokinette stitch (k1 row, p1 row) for 30.5 cm (12 in)
Sides Cast on 40 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows(120 stitches) and at the same time switch to garter stitch (knit each row) for 7.6cm (3 in) Bind off 40 stitches at beginning of next two rows (40 stitches)
Back Taking care to match the RS to same side as previous stokinette RS; switch to stokinette stitch for 30.5 cm (12 in)
Top flap Switch to garter stitch for 7.6cm (3 in) Bind off all stitches loosely Sew front of main bag to sides. Sew Back of main bag to sides. Do not sew top flap (46 cm (18 in) zipper will be sewn here later)
DEEP POCKET Bottom Pick up 40 stitches along bottom of front of bag at last row of garter stitching on bottom. (I like to pick up stitches to reduce seems. If this is too awkward for you, just cast on 40 stitches and knit the pocket as a separate piece. You can sew it on later.) Knit in garter stitch for 5 cm (2 in).
Front and sides Cast on 8 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows (56 stitches) while at the same time switch to stokinette stitch for 12.7 cm ( 5 in), taking care to keep the RS on the outside of the pocket. (The extra 8 stitches you cast on each side will make the sides of the pocket) Perform the following rows, taking care when knitting in stokinette to match all RS to same side of piece: Garter stitch 3 rows Stokinette stitch 4 rows Garter stitch 3 rows Stokinette stitch 4 rows Garter stitch 3 rows Stokinette stitch 4 rows Garter stitch 3 rows Bind off all stitches Sew the 8-stitch cast on edge to the bottom, and sew sides vertically up the front of the main bag, which acts as the back of the deep pocket here. (If you chose to knit the deep pocket as a separate piece, now sew the 8-stitch cast on edge to the bottom at both sides. Then sew the whole pocket to the front of the main bag, taking care to match up the bottoms at the same depth)
DEEP POCKET FLAP Pick up 40 stitches along front of bag at the same level as the top of the deep pocket. (Once again, if you prefer to knit this piece separately, just cast on 40 stitches and knit the pocket flap as a separate piece.) Knit in garter stitch (knit each row) for 5 cm (2 in). Bind off all stitches. (You have just completed the top flap of the deep pocket) (If you chose to knit the deep pocket flap as a separate piece, now sew the cast on edge to the front of the main bag, taking care to match top flap to the same height as the top of the pocket) 41 cm (16 in) zipper will be sewn around flap of the deep pocket later
SMALL POCKET Make 2. Pick up 20 stitches along bottom edge, to the left corner, of deep front pocket. After the pocket is finished, repeat this in the right front bottom corner for the second pocket. (To knit it separately, just cast on 20 stitches) Knit in garter stitch for 2.5 cm (1 in). End with a row facing the inside of the pocket. (If you are knitting the pocket as a separate piece, there will be no outside and inside yet, just stop at 2.5 cm (1 in).) Beginning with the next row (an outside pocket row) cast on 4 stitches at beginning of row (24 stitches). Then P4, K20 Cast on 4 stitches at the beginning of next row (28 stitches) Then K4, P20, K4. (The stitches cast on in the last two rows will form the sides of the small pockets) Follow the following pattern: Row 1: P4, k20, P4 Row 2: K4, P2, K16, P2, K4 Row 3: P4, K2, P16, K2, P4 Row 4: K4, P2, K2, P12, K2, P2, K4 Row 5: P4, K2, P2, K12, P2, K2, P4 Row 6: K4, P2, K2, P2, K8, P2, K2, P2, K4 Row 7: P4, K2, P2, K2, P8, K2, P2, K2, P4 Row 8: K4, P2, K2, P2, K8, P2, K2, P2, K4 Row 9: P4, K2, P2, K12, P2, K2, P4 Row 10: K4, P2, K2, P12, K2, P2, K4 Row 11: P4, K2, P16, K2, P4 Row 12: K4, P2, K16, P2, K4 Row 13: P4, K20, P4 Row 14: K4, P20, K4 Row 15: P4, K20, P4 Rows 16-19: knit Bind off all stitches Sew the 4-stitch cast on edge to the bottom, and sew sides vertically up the front of the deep pocket, which acts as the back of the small pocket here. (If you chose to knit the small pocket as a separate piece, now sew the 4-stitch cast on edge to the bottom. Then sew the whole pocket to the front of the deep pocket, taking care to match up the bottoms at the same depth) (You have just completed one small front pocket. Repeat for second pocket)
SMALL POCKET FLAP Pick up 20 stitches along front of deep pocket at same height at top of small pocket. (To knit it separately, just cast on 20 stitches) Knit in garter stitch for 2.5 cm (1 in). Bind off all stitches. (If you chose to knit the small pocket as a separate piece, now sew it to the deep pocket at the same height as the top of the small pocket) (You have just completed the top flap of the small pocket. Repeat for second small pocket.) SHOULDER STRAP Cast on 10 stitches. Knit in garter stitch to 2/3 desired length. Stretch strap.
