- Set of four 2.50mm (US 2) double-pointed needles
- Yarn bobbins
- Yarn needle
* Note that socks are not identically coloured. Main colour used for one sock is used as one of the contrasting colours in the other and vice versa.
GAUGE
32 sts and 40 rows = 4ins/ 10cm over St st
NOTES
The argyle patterned portion of the leg of the sock is worked back and forth on straight needles down to the heel flap. The gusset and foot is then worked on 4 double-pointed needles. The centre back seam of the sock is joined once the sock has been completed. Crisscross stitch pattern lines are worked in duplicate stitch on the finished sock.
Before beginning each sock, wind off 2 bobbins or small balls of CC1 yarn, one for each half diamond and 1 bobbin or small ball of CC2 yarn for the central diamond. To prevent making a hole when changing colours, always pick up the new colour under the colour you are dropping so the yarns are twisted on the WS.
METHOD
Leg
Cast on 58 (66, 74)sts on straight needles using long-tail cast-on method.
Work in ribbing as follows, noting that a selvedge st is worked at beg and end of every row (slip first st of every row):
Row 1 (WS): Sl1 purlwise, p1, [k2, p2] to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): Sl1, k1, [p2, k2] to end of row.
Rep these 2 rows of ribbing until piece from beg measures 1in/ 2.5cm, inc 1 st in centre of last row. 59 (67, 75)sts now on needle.
Work even in St st for 1/2in/ 13mm, ending with a WS row.
Referring to size-appropriate chart, establish Argyle pattern as follows:
Row 1 (RS): Join CC1 and sl1 (selvedge st), k1 CC1, k 27 (31, 35) MC, k1 CC2, k 27 (31, 35) MC, k1 CC1, p1 CC1 (selvedge st).
Row 2 (WS): Sl1 (selvedge st), p2 CC1, p 25 (29, 33) MC, p3 CC2, p 25 (29, 33) MC, p3 CC1.
Cont working from appropriate chart as established, working 1 more st in CC at each side of diamonds to row 14 (16, 18), then work 1 less st in CC at each side of diamonds to row 27 (31, 35). Break CC yarns, leaving a long tail of CC1.
Purl 1 row even in MC.
Next row (RS): K first 14 (16, 18)sts onto double-pointed needle #1, k next 30 (34, 38)sts onto double-pointed needle #2 (instep sts) then k rem 15 (17, 19)sts onto double-pointed needle #3.
Next rnd: Join in a rnd by knitting together the last st on needle #3 and first st on needle #1, k to end of rnd. 58 (66, 74)sts now in rnd.
Cont working in rnds (k every rnd) for 1/2in/ 13mm.
Heel flap
K 14 (16, 18)sts from needle #1 onto end of needle #3. Leave rem 30 (34, 38)sts on needle #2 for the instep. Turn.
With WS facing, work back and forth on 28 (32, 36) heel flap sts as follows:
Row 1 (WS): Sl1 purlwise, p to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): Sl1 knitwise, [k1, sl1 knitwise] to last st, k1.
Rep these 2 rows until heel flap measures approx 2 1/2ins/ 6.5cm, ending with a WS row.
Turn heel
Row 1 (RS): K16 (18, 20), ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl1, k to 1 st before the gap, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: Sl1, p to 1 st before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
Cont decreasing in this manner until 16 (18, 20)sts rem on needle, ending with a WS row, turn.
Instep/Gusset
With RS facing, k across 16 (18, 20) heel sts then pick up and k 12 (12, 14)sts along one side of heel flap. With second empty needle k 30 (34, 38) instep sts on needle # 2. With third empty needle (now needle #3) pick up and k 12 (12, 14)sts along other side of heel flap, then k the first 8 (9, 10) heel sts onto end of needle #3. This marks the new beg of all subsequent rnds. 70 (76, 86)sts now in rnd.
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: Needle #1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle #2: Knit. Needle #3: K1, ssk, k to end of rnd.
Rep these 2 rnds until 56 (64, 72)sts rem.
Foot
Work even until foot from picked-up sts at heel measures approx 5 (5 1/2, 6)ins/ 13 (14, 15)cm or to base of big toe when sock is tried on.
Toe
Rnd 1: Needle #1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle #2: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle #3: K1, ssk, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rep these 2 rnds until 28 (32, 36)sts rem.
Rep rnd 1 until 8 (8, 12)sts rem.
Break yarn leaving a long tail. Graft toe sts together using Kitchener stitch.
Finishing
Pick up sts along one side of back leg opening and place on one needle. Pick up sts along opposite side of back leg opening and place on another needle. With right sides together and beg at point where sock was joined in a rnd, join centre back seam using 3-needle bind off method. Alternatively, the seam may be sewn closed.
Referring to charts and close-up photos and using yarn needle and CC yarns, embroider intersecting crisscross lines in duplicate st.
